Topic: Some insights into the shape modification of inclusions during steel refining
Abstract: Nonmetallic inclusions in liquid steel are generated during deoxidation/killing. It is difficult to remove inclusions below about 5 µm. Shape modification of solid inclusions (alumina/spinel) is often necessary to achieve desired process and mechanical property requirements. Calcium treatment is performed to modify solid alumina and spinel inclusions into liquid calcium aluminates and CaO-Al2O3-MgO type inclusions. Two aspects related to calcium modification will be discussed : (1) mechanism of calcium modification, and (2) the effect of total oxygen and Sulphur on calcium requirement. Morphology of alumina inclusions can be significantly influenced by reducing interfacial energy at the steel-inclusion interface. This may be achieved by adding surface active elements in liquid steel.
